The Effects of Hearing Loss on Mental Health

- News Story

Persons with hearing loss are more likely to experience mental health and emotional issues, due to the feeling of being disconnected from others. Some symptoms they may have include:

  • Feelings of Frustration:

Hearing loss can make speech and other sounds seem muffled, often leading to feelings of frustration. This is because a person may be able to hear, but they are not able to clearly understand the world around them. Frustration can also be heightened in noisy environments, or after listening for long periods of time.

  • Feelings of Social Isolation:

Feelings of loneliness and social isolation are very common among persons with hearing loss. This is because it is harder for a person to follow along with others, leading them to withdraw from activities they used to enjoy and people they were once close with.

  • Decreased Confidence and Morale:

When a person has hearing loss, it can have a huge impact on their confidence. Not being able to clearly understand speech and other sounds can also be embarrassing, as it may require them to ask someone to repeat themselves multiple times to make out what is being said.

  • Feelings of Depression:

As persons with hearing loss often become disconnected from others, it can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, anger, and isolation. They may also feel as though their life is out of their control, and as though their emotions are impacting them from carrying out their everyday lives.

  • A Decline in Spiritual Participation:

Although many people receive comfort, peace, and strength from prayer and meditation, it is very common for those experiencing feelings of social isolation to withdraw from spiritual practices.
