CHHA-NL Brings World Hearing Day 2020 to a Local Workplace
The Canadian Hard of hearing Association-Newfoundland and Labrador (CHHA-NL) is committed to preventing, identifying, and treating hearing loss in Newfoundland. For World Hearing Day 2020, CHHA-NL is working with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) to offer free hearing screening tests and to promote good hearing health in the workplace.
World Hearing Day is a movement by the World Health Organization and is held on March 3rd each year. World Hearing Day strives to bring awareness to the prevention of deafness and hearing loss worldwide. The theme of World Hearing Day 2020 is ‘Hearing for Life.’ So, timely and effective interventions enable people with hearing loss to reach their full potential.
Worldwide, around 466 million people have disabling hearing loss, with 34 million of these being children. Estimations predict that by 2050 over 900 million people will have disabling hearing loss (World Health Organization).
The CHHA-NL strongly encourages everyone to follow these three tips for good hearing health:
- Prevention: Exposure to loud noise over a long time frame will damage the ear and result in permanent hearing loss. So, wearing earplugs or earmuffs in situations involving loud noise helps to combat hearing loss caused by noise.
- Identification: Hearing tests and hearing screenings are methods to determine your current level of hearing. Early treatment can reduce the negative impacts of hearing loss and can ease access to improve communication. The CHHA-NL offers free hearing screenings at our provincial office in Mount Pearl.
- Treatment: If you have identified hearing loss, treatment is the next step. Seek out information and resources to educate yourself on the treatment options available. The CHHA-NL provides many hearing health resources, including personalized information, resource groups, lipreading classes, and hearing assistive technology for loan and purchase.
