Alert and Aware
Provincial Fire Alert Program for the Hard of Hearing

Fire detectors are important for safety. For those who are hard of hearing or late deafened, traditional home fire detectors are not reliable because it can be challenging to hear the alarm (loudness OR pitch).

The Fire alerts available through the Alert and Aware Program warn of smoke and fire using other senses, including vision (flashing light), touch (vibration) and a sound that is proven to be easier to hear.

What Is Provided To Successful Applicants?

Successful applicants will receive a Kidde smoke detector, and a Lifetone HL Bedside Fire Alarm and Clock –  proven to be most effective for awakening people in an emergency.  This device includes:

  • Loud (> 85 dBA) 520 Hz alarm sound
  • Baritone voice announcing “FIRE! GET OUT!”
  • Powerful bed shaker vibration
  • Bright orange screen flashing “FIRE”

“The Lifetone HL Bedside Fire Alarm and Clock “listens” for the distinct sound of your home smoke alarm 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (and is smart enough to ignore other high frequency sounds). When it detects your smoke alarm, it immediately begins broadcasting three different alert signals to give you the best possible chance of waking up quickly.
